Organ System

Liver

Your liver detoxifies, makes bile to digest fat, builds cholesterol and proteins, stores vitamins and minerals, and regulates blood sugar. In TCM, the liver clock runs from 1–3am.

Signs of Distress

  • Waking between 1–3am
  • Anger or irritability without clear cause
  • Greasy stool or trouble digesting fat
  • Bitter taste in the mouth
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes

Top Foods

The Mechanisms

Beets

vegetable Β· Mediterranean and Eastern European folk medicine

Beets are rich in dietary nitrates that the body converts to nitric oxide β€” gently relaxing blood vessel walls and supporting endothelial health. Betalains are powerful liver-supporting antioxidants. The deep red color signals high anthocyanin content.

Preparation: Juice raw for full nitrate availability. Roast for a sweeter, gentler effect.

Leafy Greens (kale, spinach, chard, dandelion)

vegetable

Dark leafy greens deliver chlorophyll, which supports cellular oxygenation and gentle detoxification, plus the highest food concentrations of vitamin K1 and folate.

Preparation: Eat raw in salads with EVOO and lemon. Lightly cooked also works β€” and is required for thyroid patients eating cruciferous greens.

Lemon

fruit

Lemon's acidity supports stomach acid production, helps mineral and iron absorption, and gently activates phase I and II liver detoxification.

Preparation: Use in every salad dressing alongside EVOO. Add to morning water with a pinch of sea salt.

Turmeric

herb Β· Ayurvedic medicine (daily food in India)

Curcumin blocks NF-ΞΊB, the master inflammation switch, and supports liver phase II detoxification. Its bioavailability is poor on its own β€” black pepper raises absorption by ~2,000%, and dietary fat further improves it.

Dosage: Culinary: ½–1 tsp daily in food or juice. Therapeutic: 500–1000mg curcumin extract with piperine, 1–2x daily.

Hibiscus

herb Β· West African, Caribbean, and Mediterranean tea traditions

Hibiscus has documented blood-pressure-lowering effects comparable to some pharmaceutical agents. Its anthocyanins also support vascular elasticity.

Dosage: Tea: 1–2 tsp dried calyces steeped 10 minutes, 1–3 cups daily.

Healing Juices for Liver

Morning Cellular Reset

peak zone

The morning protocol juice. Beet nitrates relax the vasculature, turmeric quiets inflammation (always with a pinch of black pepper if added), ginger stimulates digestion, and citrus drives phase I/II liver detoxification. Drink within 20 minutes of pressing.

ginger (1-inch fresh root) Β· turmeric (1-inch fresh root) Β· orange (2 whole) Β· lemon (1 whole) Β· green-apple (2 whole) Β· carrot (1 large) Β· beet (1 medium)

Afternoon Green Quiet

declining zone

A low-sugar afternoon option for the Declining Zone (2–6pm). Only one fruit β€” a green apple β€” to keep glucose response gentle. Chlorophyll from greens supports oxygenation and gentle detox into evening.

cucumber (1 large, skin on) Β· green-apple (1 whole) Β· celery (3 stalks) Β· ginger (Β½-inch root) Β· lemon (Β½ whole) Β· leafy-greens (1 small handful kale or spinach)

Evening Herbal Vegetable Press

caution zone

A safe Caution Zone (6–9pm) option β€” no fruit, no starchy roots, no sweetness. A gentle mineral and chlorophyll press for those who want something between dinner and the closed kitchen.

cucumber (1 large) Β· celery (4 stalks) Β· leafy-greens (1 handful kale) Β· parsley (small handful) Β· lemon (Β½ whole)

Healing Salads for Liver

Liver Cleanse Salad

Bitter greens (dandelion, arugula) stimulate bile flow. Raw beet brings betalains for liver phase II detox. Pomegranate's punicalagins protect the vasculature. Lemon in the dressing both supports liver enzymes and boosts iron absorption from the greens.

Dressing: EVOO, fresh lemon juice, Dijon mustard, sea salt, cracked pepper
